Case study

Metodo Manniello

The Método Manniello is a dietary method developed by Dr. Donato Alberto Manniello over more than two decades of research in alternative medicine, validated across more than 30,000 patients. The mobile app translated the method into personalized weekly menus, an automatic shopping list and cooking tips, distributed internationally in five languages.

The challenge

Dr. Manniello's team had initially built a hybrid app that was successfully released on Google Play, but Apple rejected it during App Store review for not meeting their technical standards. On top of the publishing block, the app also suffered from severe performance issues that degraded the user experience on the client's devices. The project needed an intervention that solved both problems —App Store approval and performance— without breaking functional parity with the Android version already in production.

The solution

AtalayaSoft assigned Francisco José García Navarro as a senior iOS engineer to rewrite the application entirely in native code. Fran defined the project's full stack, including the backend platform on which the Android and web versions would later be rebuilt. The scope covered three fronts:

1. Native iOS rewrite from scratch

The original hybrid approach was discarded and the app was redesigned in Objective-C, integrated into Apple's native ecosystem. Local persistence was solved with CoreData (Apple's official framework for structured on-disk data management), removing the performance bottlenecks the hybrid version was carrying. The result was an app Apple approved without observations in the next review submission.

2. Parse as the single source of truth for iOS, Android and web

Fran chose Parse SDK (the backend-as-a-service platform of the time, offering a unified API across iOS, Android and web) as the product's single source of truth, and built the native iOS app on top of it. The native Android and web versions were later rebuilt on that same foundation, each handled by a different specialist coordinated by Fran. The decision avoided duplicating logic and data across platforms and gave the three versions a single source for menus, recipes and subscriptions.

3. Monetization with In-App Purchase and monthly subscriptions

The Manniello method's business model was integrated via in-app purchases with recurring monthly subscriptions using StoreKit. Distribution across five languages —English, Spanish, German, French and Russian— was handled natively with iOS localizable resources, without intermediate layers.
